Rías Baixas
Green, rainy Galicia — and Spain's benchmark white.
Rías Baixas takes its name from the rías — drowned river valleys, like fjords — along the Atlantic coast of Galicia in northwest Spain. It is green, humid and cool, and Albariño accounts for the overwhelming majority of its vines. To keep grapes away from the damp ground and the rot it brings, many vines are trained on high pergolas supported by granite posts, with the fruit hanging well above head height. The result is fresh, aromatic, saline whites — a natural match for the region's shellfish.

What the region makes
Peach, citrus and a saline finish; made to drink fresh, though the best age well.
The coolest, most Atlantic subzone — Albariño's heartland.
Worth knowing
High pergolas let sea breezes dry the grapes, fighting rot in the damp climate.
A single grape, Albariño, defines almost the entire region.
Try this region if you like fresh, zesty whites with seafood.
