Margaret River
Surf, forest and Bordeaux-style wines on Australia's far southwest coast.
Margaret River was identified as a promising wine region only in the mid-1960s, when an agricultural scientist's research compared its climate to Bordeaux's. The first commercial vines went in soon after, and within two decades it had become one of Australia's most prestigious regions — despite making only a small share of the country's wine. The Indian and Southern Oceans on three sides moderate temperatures, giving a long, even growing season. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the stars, alongside a crisp, distinctive blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
